Frequently there are concerns expressed by Camp Directors and senior staff regarding criminal record checks for those individuals under 18. This paper, authored by the federal Department of Justice, and taken from their website may assist in raising awareness of when criminal record checks can be asked for, by whom and what in fact will be released – http://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/cj-jp/yj-jj/tools-outils/sheets-feuillets/pdf/recor-dossi.pdf
Young people, under 18 can be asked to get a criminal record check, but they must visit their local police, obtain the results themselves and then they may share it with the Camp Director. The results cannot be provided directly to Camp Directors by the police, or a provider such as SterlingBackcheck.
